Nitrous Oxide
(©1994 John Akin, Jr.)

(Oil on Arches paper.) This was that same model as in Green Eve. She was a wacko...

The title of this piece comes from a conversation we had with her (we meaning myself and Andrea Stidgeon, who was the other student in there at the time...). I said I kept thinking of the Beatles song "Good Day Sunshine" while I was in the art studio. She said "You know, that reminds me of this time I was at a party, and everyone was doing hits of nitrous oxide. Someone was in the back room watching TJ Hooker, so now, whenever I do nitrous oxide I get stuck on the theme song to TJ Hooker..."

Does nitrous oxide kill brain cells or something?

Anyway, I originally hated this painting so much I turned it upside down and completely reworked it. It ended up being one of my more interesting paintings of the series and I used it for the post card image for my senior show...

I sent a copy of the postcard to my Great Aunt Francis, who wrote back something to the effect of "I'm glad you pursued the arts, but nitrous oxide, that's serious stuff. I hope you're not doing it..."

Nope, just painting nitrous oxide junkies... Hee hee...
